The normal path of a homeowner is to continually upsize their home, moving into bigger and better places as life goes on. A young couple buys a small starter home, and as they grow as a family, their need for space grows as well. However, there are times in life where downsizing to a smaller place becomes the better option for homeowners. Here are four signs that this may be the case:

1. Retirement. Approaching retirement is one of the most common reasons why homeowners downsize. As retirement savings don’t always last as long as retirees expect, saving money through downsizing is a good way to combat financial changes.

2. Too much anxiety. Whether it’s brought on by the constant upkeep of the home or other factors, anxiety can run high for homeowners. And as people age, this upkeep becomes even more of a task. If a spouse passes away, the remaining spouse will then be responsible for any and all home matters. If continuing to own a large home is more stress than it’s worth, consider downsizing.

3. Unused space. If you have more space than you need, it may be time to downsize. Cleaning rooms that are going unused is a hassle; why not move to a more manageable space?

4. Financial opportunities. If your home has appreciated a lot, and the money’s just waiting for you to take it, you can cash out and buy a nice apartment with the money from the sale.
